In June I did a number of races including TGNY 100. Here’s a nice video about it:

I wanted to do a body building show sooner than later, so the last few weeks have been prepping for that rather than taking on a new sport. I do 5 days a week of cardio, 5 days of weight training. I actually think I’ve only had 1 rest day in the past few weeks because so many days I play tennis too, but that doesn’t count toward my training. I want to do the Brooklyn Grand Prix on Oct 4th.

I really need to find a posing coach because I know that will be my biggest struggle along next to losing all my body fat. I thought about getting a bright orange spray tan like an Oompa Loompa but I’m told the judges will mark points off.

So my trainer told me no more long distance running but last night I snuck in a 6 hour race, the Pajama Romp, in Astoria Park. I ran over 33 miles but it’s not long distance until I’m over 50 miles.

 

 

 

June

Since doing the NYC Marathon last fall I hadn’t done much running. May got me successfully back into it. I have a few races in June. This Saturday is the Joe Kleinerman 12 hour in Crocheron Park. The Mini 10k in Central Park is the 14th. TGNY 100 is the 21st. Last year I ran the 100k and this year I wanted to do the 100 mile, but I’ll see how I’m feeling after the 12 hour. Last race I’m doing in June is the 5 mile Pride Run in Central Park. Maybe June should have been my month focused on running 🙂

I’ve been weight training a lot and I’m trying to find a competition about 3 months out. My trainer has nationals in 5 weeks and I can’t wait to see how she does.

So what am I doing this month? I considered yoga, golf, pilates, and horse riding. Is stair climbing a sport? I’ve been loving the Stairmaster. I ran up the Empire State Building once in their race, so I’m declaring June a month of stair climbing. I’m going to climb at least 20 mins a day, at least 4 days a week. I have to be careful about getting enough rest before my long races.

I can’t believe I haven’t updated in a month! Last month I finished strong and ended up playing tennis 6 days a week, but I didn’t end up playing a tournament.

This month I’m concentrating my efforts on running and I’ve been at it 4-5 days a week, although pretty low mileage compared with what I’ve done in the past. One of my tennis friends wanted to do a race for the first time so we trained and did the UAE 10k last weekend in Central Park. It was fun to help someone reach their goal. Here’s the post-race photo.

In June I’m registered for a number of races, ranging in distance from a 4 miler to a 100k/100 miler.

I’ve been weight training with Jehina 3/wk these days. It’s difficult to want to start a new sport because I have been loving the gym. My running compliments the weight training because I’m supposed to do 5 days a week of cardio. Jehina was going to find me a smaller bikini/figure competition, hopefully about 3 months from now so I can focus all of my energy toward competing.

 

 

Improvement!

This month has been so much better! I’ve been playing tennis 6 days a week, 1-2 hrs a day. This morning I played at Roosevelt Island with Gary. Although it adds a bunch of commuting time it’s fun to take the tram and it was a beautiful morning. Here’s a selfie with Gary.

I need to start making some challenges for myself. One of the guys I hit with wants to play a mixed doubles tournament. Another said I look miserable when I play so I’ve actually been trying to pretend to like playing and smile occasionally. I do enjoy it every once in awhile.
I’ve still been training with Jehina 2-3x a week and after playing tennis today I went to Brooklyn and had a tough leg workout with her. I’m down about 5 lbs and she’s giving me a new diet today. I’m only allowed to eat the same things daily. I like food and I like variety, but I’m willing to try it. I still need to do the body building show!

Failure

March was a huge failure. I traveled over the second week and didn’t end up taking any spin class while I was away and then I got really sick for over a week and I ended up not doing the March Madness Duathlon. My month of spinning was a complete failure. I’m setting myself up for success in April because I’m going to play tennis which I do every day anyway. My goal this month will be to play 25 days and play a tournament.

Pyongyang Marathon

I’m planning on running a marathon in every country that has one. I found a list of races with about 70 countries represented on it, which seems like a very doable goal considering it took just under 11 years to do the 50 states. I didn’t start out with the goal of running each state so in the first three years I only did four marathons and I took a full year off for an injury too.  Countries will be more expensive and have more travel time, so I can expect this to take longer, but I’m so excited about it.

When I told other people about my goal, they would ask about going to war torn countries but I explained many don’t have races. It did inspire me to look at races that have a challenge to get there and North Korea was one of the first ones researched. When I first looked up the Pyongyang Marathon, only elite international runners were allowed in. Now I saw “every day runners” (but arguably elite for women) are allowed in with a sub 3:00 time. For the half-marathon they don’t have this time restriction. I did some more research and came across this tour info. I would LOVE to do this so much!! Normally a half-marathon wouldn’t get me to travel somewhere, but for this, ABSOLUTELY!

I met Anders (an avid traveler, tour guide, writer for Swedish Runners World) in North Dakota. North Dakota was state 43 for both of us. Since then he’s finished his 50 states and finished an incredible amount of countries. I won’t tell you how many because I’m incredibly jealous. Anyway, I’m sure when I’ll do this, he’d be a willing travel companion. He may even beat me to it.

Slow start

It took me until today to get to another spin class. Blah.

Sunday I worked all day so I couldn’t find a class. I had downloaded the app Cycle Coach so tried it in the gym in my building. The problem was it was an upright bike but not a spin bike and when I would go into third position the wheel would lurch. I gave up after 5 minutes because I didn’t feel like peddling as fast as I could on my tush. I ran on the treadmill instead.
Monday was a rest day. Tuesday I played tennis for two hours and then worked upper body with Jehina. Wednesday was a hard leg workout with Jehina. Thursday I played tennis and then went to a vinyasa class. Today I played tennis and finally went to spin again. I got there early so I ended up being on the bike for 70 minutes.
I enjoyed today’s class more than the first but it took me about 35 minutes to start feeling good. I have that happen when I run too. Most of the time it takes seven or eight miles to feel warmed up and ready to give 100% effort.

This coming week I’m going to put more effort into going to classes since that was my plan for the month. I won’t set the bar high- maybe just three classes instead of this weeks measly two.

Spinning with G

Gary and I took a spin class at Asphalt Green this morning. It was my first since 2010 so I only had a vague idea how to set up my bike. I had to attach clips, which took longer than it should have since I didn’t do it properly. The class itself felt pretty cramped, bikes were in close proximity to each other. I imagine most classes in NYC will be like this since space is at a premium. At the beginning I was very sensitive to the crowding because I prefer some distance and it was reminding me of a corral at a race or Britney Spears in Vegas concert. I also didn’t want to be pelted with sweat or bodily fluids by anyone near by – it happens in full Bikram yoga classes.
The total ride time for the class was 50 minutes. At 15:40 I started sweating but kept thinking, “running is way harder.” I was in control of the intensity of my workout but because I’m so used to endurance races I kept finding myself settle at a comfortable pace and I would really have to push myself to ride harder. The positives were I sweated for most of the class and I was done with cardio early in the day, next time I’ll push harder.
Tomorrow I work most of the day and I haven’t been able to find an evening spin class in my neighborhood. I’m going to keep looking because I would like to take a class every day until the race. I downloaded three different spin apps so I’ll go to the gym and do one on my own if I end up not finding one.
Lastly, here’s my calf before my month of spinning next to Gary’s. We didn’t really get a good photo because all our running group agrees Gary has the most defined calves and should be a Shape-up model.

6 weeks of Jehina complete

Today was the last session of the month with Jehina. It was a really fun, hard workout with all my favorite things like squats and the leg press. All month Jehina told me not to weigh myself so I tried not to, but I couldn’t stop myself sometimes, so my weight today didn’t come as a surprise. Feb 1st I was 145.0 lbs, today I was 145.8 lbs. I was hoping to lose a few pounds with changing my diet because when I’m running regularly, I’m at least 7 lbs lighter. Since my last marathon in November I’ve put on some pounds that don’t want to come off without 20 mile runs and starvation.

There were some definite changes in my body but I don’t think my full set of “after” photos are good enough, so I’ll leave you with this only slightly muscular photo.

Tomorrow will be my last one on one training session with Jehina for February. Today we had an arm and core workout, tomorrow is legs. My “after” photos will be taken tomorrow. My prediction is slightly less back fat. It’s going to take a long time to prepare for a body building show but I’ve started. I’m going to continue training with her twice a week until I’m prepared for a show.

Gary is on board training for the duathlon with me and he signed up for the race yesterday. He got second place in his age in his last duathlon, so he has incentive to train and get first this time. Having a workout buddy makes training so much fun and keeps me accountable so this is adding to my enthusiasm. I play tennis twice a week with someone willing to do some running after our hit, so I’m going to take him up on it and do some of my training with him.
